Problem trying to use allegro-5

Hi I am new to msys2 so this may be my fault. I installed mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-allegro (version 5.2.10.1-3) using pacman. I tried to compile this very simple program

#include <allegro5/allegro.h>

int main(void) {
    return 0;
}

like this

cc $(pkg-config --cflags allegro-5) simple.c

and I get

simple.c:1:10: fatal error: allegro5/allegro.h: No such file or directory
    1 | #include <allegro5/allegro.h>
      |          ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
compilation terminated.

because (surprisingly to me), pkg-config doesn't output anything for cflags. I added in an include

cc $(pkg-config --cflags allegro-5) -I /ucrt64/include simple.c

now I get

In file included from /ucrt64/include/allegro5/internal/alconfig.h:35,
                 from /ucrt64/include/allegro5/base.h:50,
                 from /ucrt64/include/allegro5/allegro.h:26,
                 from simple.c:1:
/ucrt64/include/allegro5/platform/almngw32.h:23:10: fatal error: direct.h: No such file or directory
   23 | #include <direct.h>
      |          ^~~~~~~~~~
compilation terminated.

Any ideas? I think I do want the UCRT64 platform, don't I (my ultimate aim is to make a DLL which I can link with MSVC)

I think I solved it. I installed gcc and it should have been mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-gcc.
