Why does the xmpp client Profanity pull in a bunch of desktop packages?

Profanity is a terminal only client and runs just fine on a tty. Is there a reason for this? Would it be possible to fix it?

it supports doing something with xscreensaver and a tray icon

i don't suppose there's a way to split or making that functionality optional without building it myself, right?

there's no way to split it, and you'd have to rebuild it to not link against gtk
